Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 Review January 14, 2010
As to the Lenovo ThinkPad fans of all over the world, it seems that black is always their lucky color in their minds. While, there is a breakthrough to Lenovo’s new laptop: Thinkpad X100e and Thinkpad Edge. The new ThinkPad series has changed a lot according to its color, keyboard, and touchpad etc. with new and bright color in ThinkPad, they will become more magic. Today, we will have a review on Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30.
Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 is targeted at small business up to about 100 employees, and Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 comes in multiple color choices (varies by country) to become more fashion.
ThinkPad fans must know that ThinkPad laptops always came with rubber coat, while the new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 comes with engineering plastic which is glossier.
Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 comes with a 13.3-inch LED-backlit screen at the resolution of 1378×768 pixels, and at the ratio of 16:9. As you can see, there is a built-in camera on the top of the screen, which is convenient for users to use.
All in all, the view angles of Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 are very good especially the horizontal viewing angles, which will definitely reach your requirements. As it is a glossy screen, so you had better not use it outdoor.
Carrying ThinkPad Edge E30 around would certainly be easy and convenient, which is what most users are looking for in a notebook. Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 weighs 1.635kg when it comes with 4-cell battery, and the power adapter is added, the weight of ThinkPad Edge E30 is just 1.99kg. Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 is just in the thickness of 26.3mm. So the portability of ThinkPad Edge E30 is very good.
The logo “Lenovo” is left below the screen, while the “E30” is right below the screen which makes the 16:9 ratio screens become wider. And it makes the ThinkPad Edge E30 is more different from the traditional ThinkPad notebooks.
Another big change is the layout of the keyboard; as everyone knows, ThinkPad keyboard is in delicate texture, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30’s keyboard is in full size and as same as in the texture, it’s quite firm with good tactile feedback from keys. What’s more, ThinkPad Edge E30 comes with a spill resistant keyboard in case you spill you coffee on the keyboard and destroy the keyboard.
ThinkPad Edge E3 also has standard features like TrackPoint + large touch pad, although there is no changes on the TrackPoint, there is more space for the TrackPoint as to the new keyboard, so it is easier for you to handle it.
The touchpad is wider than the average touchpad; at same time, the touchpad also provides the most popular multi-touch technology. You can expect it with two-finger scrolling, rotating, pinch zoom, and a three-fingered flick. As the touchpad is in matte finish, so you can use it with ease even though your hands are dry or moist.
Like the traditional ThinkPad laptops, the “Fn” function key is also located on the left bottom corner of the keyboard. Although there is some argument for this layout, it has no influence on Lenovo users. And the below the “Fn” function, there is a small built-in microphone, which is closer to users and has a better effects for users.
Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30 also ships with many of our ThinkVantage Technologies like Rescue and Recovery, System Update, Access Connections, and Password Manager. If you want Accidental Damage Protection, you can get that too.
On the right bottom corner, the arrow keys are designed differently, and the arrow keys are smaller and shorter than the normal keys, which will convenient to the business users.
On the left side of Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30, there is Security Slot, VGA port, HDMI port, RJ-45 cable interface and a USB 2.0 port. The heat vent is also on the left side. With VGA port, you can have a PPT presentation with an ease.

On the right side of Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E30, there is external power jack, two USB 2.0 ports, microphone/headphone, and 5-in-1 memory card reader.

Now we have a look on ThinkPad Edge E30 heat performance, as shown below, the temperature of the keyboard is very cool and the temperature of its bottom is not high too.
ThinkPad E30 is the first laptop coming with CULV platform. The performance of ThinkPad E30 is shown as follow:
At last, we test ThinkPad E30 with PCMark05 software, the PCMark05 score is 3528, which is a good score. There are 5201 scores according to its hardware, follow by the processor and memory.
