Lenovo ThinkPad T400s Review February 2, 2010

When open the Lenovo ThinkPad T400s laptop, there is no much changes between the layout of ThinkPad T400s and ThinkPad T400. The location of the speakers, palmrest, fingerprint and the drive are all same. As the ThinkPad T400s comes with a 6-cell battery, so the part of the screen is become thinner than ThinkPad T400, and it can stand stable when it is opened.
This is the touchpad of T400s. First of all, T400s features the trackpoint with blue and red color which is disappeared since the ThinkPad T60, and the shape of it is also changed which is crescent-shaped. What’s more, the touchpad of ThinkPad T400s supports multi-touch as well as texture design. The touchpad of ThinkPad T400s is roomy so it is easier for users to use it, while it results in that the space between the touchpad and the trackpoint is narrow, so we will miss touch the touchpad when we just want to use the trackpoint.

On the right side of the touchpad, it is the fingerprint reader and the ThinkPad logo. And the fingerprint reader is UPEK instead of Authentec which is on the T400, X200 laptops. In addition, do you see the two white spots on the both sides of fingerprint reader? They are the fingerprint reader indicator light, when we want to activate the system, the left light will turn on green, and when the fingerprint is wrong, the right light will turn red. Furthermore, ThinkPad T400s also supports fingerprint boot, and it will recognize the password too to boot your laptop. And you don’t worry about that it will waste lots of power for this action, and the fingerprint system power consumption is quite less even can be negligible.

Now we have a look of the T400s’ keyboard. There is nothing changed but the ESC and Delete keys. The texture of T400s’ keyboard is more comfortable than the ThinkPad T6 and ThinkPad T400; it has a feeling of more solid and practical. The keycap is wider and the space is narrower than ThinkPad T400, which can protect it from the dust to extend the keyboard’s life.

The biggest change of the ThinkPad T400s is the ESC key, Manufacturers claim that the ESC key demonstrates user-friendly features.

Now we have a look of the layout of its left side keyboard of ThinkPad T60, the red lines I drew are the shortcut keys Ctrl + F4 and Alt + F4 which people use most frequently.

This is the left side keyboard of ThinkPad T400s, the red lines I drew now is the shortcut keys Ctrl + F4 and Alt + F4 on the ThinkPad T400s, and the blue lines I drew is the shortcut keys Ctrl + F4 and Alt + F4 on the ThinkPad T60. Now as you can see, the distance of the shortcut on the ThinkPad T400s is father than that of ThinkPad T60, so I think it may be a little difficult for us to use it.

The logo of ThinkPad T400s is on the right of the screen, and the hinge axis is hard and stable enough.

On the left bottom side of the screen, there is three buttons: volume, microphone and the ThinkVantage buttons.

There are red indicator lights added to the volume button and microphone mute switch.

Near the middle of that T400s, there is power switch which is designed big and also added the power indicator. When booting the laptop, the indicator will become green, and when T400s is standby, the indicator will flash every 3 seconds.

On the bottom side of Lenovo ThinkPad T400s, there is just the Lenovo logo, and the texture of Lenovo ThinkPad T400s is similar to that of the Lenovo ThinkPad X300/301.

On the left side of the Lenovo ThinkPad T400s, from the left to the right, there is air vent, USB port, Headphone / microphone jack, five-in-one card reader, and the Express/34 which can be customized.

On the right side of ThinkPad T400s, there is wireless switch, drive and the security slot. And the drive is compatible on the ThinkPad T400s and ThinkPad T400, and the location of CD-ROM also supports the second battery and the HDD adapter.

On the rear side of the ThinkPad T400s, from the left to the right, there is power jack, VGA, Wired network card, USB ports (powered), eSATA, and DisplayPort. It can be safely said that the interfaces of ThinkPad T400s are complete, and it is also the first ThinkPad laptop equipped with eSATA interface.

This is the test comparison between eSATA and USB ports.

The following is the read performance test comparison between the eSATA and USB ports.

When the battery is removed, you can see as follows, the battery can last for 3 hours. There is a SIM slot on the middle side.

The drive is at this position, we only can remove the drive after removing the battery, and there is a sign for the drive shown on the picture.
