Lenovo ThinkPad T400s Disassembly February 10, 2010

Lenovo ThinkPad T series are most people’s favorite laptops as they are in good performance as well as good commercial choices. The 14 inches laptops with 2.4kg or so are a little heavier to us, so when Lenovo ThinkPad T400s with 1.8kg released, many ThinkPad fans regards it as one of their favorite laptops. So today I will disassemble Lenovo ThinkPad T400s to let you know the inner world of it.
I think many people don’t want to let their laptops be broken, but even you just want to replace a memory module for your laptop, you may have to remove your keyboard, palmrest and so on, so it is very complex. While, on Lenovo ThinkPad T400s, if you want to upgrade the memory, HDD or ExpressCard, what you need to do is just to remove only one screw.


On the bottom side of ThinkPad T400s, there are signs on the back lid to remind you where the component exactly is, and it is easier for you to disassemble your laptop. Moreover, the screws holding the HDD are beneath the battery to keep the ThinkPad T400s more simple and beautiful.

In ThinkPad T400s, there are two memory module slots, a standard PCI-E slot and a half version of the PCI-E slot with wireless card. Moreover, the Intel 5300 wireless card of T400s has three antennas, and two of them are for further use.

1.8-inch HDD

As Lenovo ThinkPad T400s laptop is light, so it is equipped with a 128GB SDD hard disk.
Although there are not conventional components under keyboard for you to upgrade, it is still easy to remove the keyboard. You can be easy to find two screws holding the keyboard on the bottom side of the Lenovo ThinkPad T400s.

Unplug the keyboard cable. The keyboard, trackpoint and function keys are connected with motherboard by just one cable.


There are three leaking holes on the bottom side of Lenovo ThinkPad T400s, so there is no influence if you spill water or your coffee on the keyboard; it can drain the liquid out through three leaking holes, and it will not affect the internal hardware of ThinkPad T400s.


Compared ThinkPad T400s with ThinkPad T400, there are many differences. One of the differences is that the position of buckles is now at the laptop body instead of the screen.

The design of ThinkPad T400s’ palmrest is just so-so, there are more screws to hold the palmrest; and under the palmrest, there is HDD and battery.

You will see the whole motherboard of ThinkPad T400s just by removing the metal frame.

The Multi-card reader is in the Express Card slot. Many people will assume that there is no Express Card slot on the ThinkPad T400s laptop; in fact, ThinkPad T400s comes with not only the Express Card slot but also a Multi-card reader in the Express Card slot, the Multi-card reader is fixed in the Express Card slot by a screw, so if you want to use the Express Card slot, you have to disassemble the laptop to remove the screw.

When you removed the motherboard, you will see the processor and chipset on the back side of motherboard.

Although Lenovo ThinkPad T400s is not a ULV laptop, but the weight, dimension, and the internal structure of Lenovo ThinkPad T400s are all not worse than ULV laptop. The differences of SP9600 Processor and SP9500, SP9400 Processor are little.
