Lenovo G460 Review-29

In “Street Fighter 4″ default quality, Lenovo G460 got the final score rank “C”, average frame rate is 42.99FPS. Although such results do not meet professional players (frames per second, not less than 60FPS) needs, but for occasional users who play games have been pretty good. I do not place my laptop over anything that is soft to prevent it from covering the louvers located at the left side of the laptop to prevent it from overheating, read that from the manual.  (Quote)  (Reply)

There are two things that you look for when you buy a product. The product and the after purchase support. And unfortunately, I am highly disappointed with both after purchasing Lenovo ideapad G460 (2.4 GHz/i5 processor/4GB RAM). It has been approximately 15 days since I received this computer and here are some of my experiences with Lenovo and this product.

Delivery: Lenovo website says that the product is shipped within 10 days of order receipt. I order the computer on 9th June online and they gave me the shipping date of 24th. However, around 24th the shipping date changed automatically to 29th. When I called Lenovo about the issue, they clearly indicated that they are not legally bound to ship the product on the specified date. Since I had to leave for a business trip, I asked Lenovo to hold the delivery till I come back which they failed to do even after assuring me that they would. They eventually gave me a $40 discount which paid for the gas I burned to drive back home again and receive the computer.

Performance: Ok, so I agree it has a high end i5 processor but within 15 days of using this computer, the computer crashed twice with BSOD and froze atlease 10 times and once in middle of a business presentation.

Quality: I plugged in headphones in headphone jack and when I pulled it out, the green plastic thing came out with the jack.

Speakers: I can barely hear the audio unless its middle of the night and there is no background noise.

Veriface Login: So it does sounds cool when your computer recognizes your face and without even typing a password, it logs you in. However, there has not been a single case when I didn’t have to hold the computer in my hands and walk towards or away from light for it to recognize the face. It does not even give you an option to cancel the Veriface login and type the password. You are out of luck if you are outside at evening or later and trying to log into your computer. It irritated me the most when I tried to log into the computer to look for a saved address while I was travelling. I could not log in atall that evening.

Battery Life: It says it is an energy star rated but don’t expect its batteries to run more then 2-2.5 hrs.

Customer Service: When I called customer support, the representative said “Sir, I am looking at my computer’s headphone jack and I don’t think it would break unless I pull it out”. She wasn’t even willing to consider the possibility that they might have sent me a defective unit. And when I asked her if I could return the unit, she told me straightforward that now that I have broken it, I can’t get my money back. On top of that if I want it fixed, I’ll have to pay for the repairs as well as the shipping charges…

Now there are a few good things about this computer as well but definitely not even worth half its price. My 2003 dell with a broken hinge and dead battery works better then this. So my advise… “DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT buy this computer unless you are comfortable flushing $800 down the drain.  (Quote)  (Reply)

Deepak,

No matter how much discount they are giving, they are still selling a piece of s**t. i5 with 2.4 Ghz and 4 GB ram won’t do any good when your computer would hang every now and then.

In one day of use I found the following with this laptop.

1) Crappy touch pad: I donno how lenovo can put in crappy hardware. The touch pad is a big pain in the A**. When you want to click you need to do it hard. It cannot select. This touch pad is rough with dots that when we use touch pad for long time it feels ur fingers are getting rough. Integrated right and left buttons..oh man what a pain they are..Unless Lenovo replaces its touch pad please dont buy it!!!!.
From my last 4 laptops I hv not used any external mouse. But this S**T mandates u to use a mouse. Which i hate to use with a laptop.

2) Crappy cam. The problem Himanshu was telling is right. That is because Lenevo wanted to make money by putting in 0.3 MP webcam and it is so bad that even in bright light the video or pictures from this cam looks sick. If you are a person who does videochat or takes pictures then please dont buy this laptop. The cam is crappy due to one unforgiving reason.”THIS IS A VALUE LINE LAPTOP”. How much more will it cost for Lenovo to put in 1.3 MP cam????

Battery life is 2 – 2.5 hrs under medium load(Tht too screen brightness turned down to 50%) with i3 processor.

I will suggest Toshiba. Dont buy this crappy laptop!!  (Quote)  (Reply)

So sad,
I already bought one with i3, 2.27Ghz, 2Gb ram and 500Gb HDD in the price of $585.00 last Saturday. I can’t search for the review blog because i need one laptop so urgent for my work.I am comparing with Toshiba L510 and Acer don’t remember the exect model.
Like Himanshu said its hang a lot during one week usage. And i am suspect about Battery life.I think 2 hrs is maximum.Veriface login is useless and make more complexity for you to log in.I intend to remove that soon. Mouse pad L&R click is sometime take time to push again and again.  (Quote)  (Reply)

RkM August 16th, 2010

Touchpad is so bad that made me return within 24 hours at 15 % restock charges.
Funny thing is Lenovo knows there is a issue and acknowledges it but refuse to doi anything.

Mike R. September 28th, 2010

I purchased the Lenovo G460 with the i5 2.4GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD (an upgrade option on their website), Standard Intel HD graphics and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit edition in August when Lenovo had a one day sale on their website for $499 on this model. To date I have not had any issues with the laptop itself. My use is daily usually between four and ten hours a day continuous, so it gets a good daily workout. I don’t know why people complain about the veriface feature…it’s rather simple, if you don’t like it…don’t use it. It takes all of four minutes to uninstall that software via add-remove software in Windows and your problem is solved. You can still set boot and log in passwords if you are paranoid about people seeing your porn…er…files. The touch pad is different than most people are used to and might take some getting used to for some, I have yet to experience an issue with it to date. The laptop does get warm when the ambient room temp is above 80F (26C), however it still does not get anywhere near as hot as the previous Lenovo laptop which was the U330. that particular model burned up five times under warranty, the temps that I see on this system, even when running under a load with high room temps are half of what the previous laptop would run at. You will notice heat up top mostly due to the positioning of the RAM in this model. All RAM heats up under load, especially the more you have.
So here is the skinny of it;
Pros: Fairly thin and lightweight, good business, internet, streaming video/movie and basic gaming performance. Vivid display that is not as reflective as you might think when in a bright environment (provided you get the anti-reflective screen…they did offer two choices when I ordered mine). Good battery life, I get just over 6 hours of use out of it with bluetooth and wifi turned off. With Wifi enabled and browsing the web, I manage 5:25 hours of use. HDMI & VGA out ports on the side make hooking it up to anything new or old a breeze. Windows 7 plays nice with both old and new software so you don’t have to worry about that ancient version of Office not working. I despise touch pads, however this touch pad is a vast improvement over previous generations of touch pads. While I still use a wireless USB mouse, I find that I am using the touch pad more than the mouse with this laptop.

Cons: Serious lack of USB ports. Seriously, in this age of USB everything, having only TWO ports is unacceptable. Sure you can buy a port replicator, but the point of a laptop is to be free of clunky extras such as that. Be careful of the screen itself, even the lightest touch against the screen will cause distortion, something I haven’t seen in almost a decade, so guard your screen well from pointy fingers and co-workers with pens who like to point things out. Heat, yes it gets warm, but if you just use common sense like not using it on your bed or blocking the vents, then it’s a non issue. If you are that concerned with heat, but a laptop cooler.

Bottom line: Good performance, especially for the price. Stable operation, multitasks well and worth the investment for a mid range laptop.  (Quote)  (Reply)

Just took delivery of the unit, looks nice, hope I didn’t make a mistake about chhosing this model. Out of the box, everything looks like the product’s well made, I will try it out tomorrow at the office to check battery life and possible cooling issues.
Keeping my fingers crossed.  (Quote)  (Reply)

Would not recommend purchase. I got a G460 i5 with 4GB ram, 500 GB HDD, Win 7.

Pros: Superfast. Web browsing is a pleasure. I will never go back to a 32 bit OS.

Cons:
Trackpad is a f*%&ing disaster. Totally useless. Randomly decides is doesn’t want to recognize your finger and clicking the integrated left or right buttons requires a herculean effort. You will need an external mouse for this laptop.

wireless modem is billed as Intel B/G/N but does not support 5Ghz wireless N standard. Misleading.

The laptop frequently locks up on wakeup from hibernation, requiring a hard reboot that looses all work. Happens 2-3 times a month. Unacceptable.

Overall, would recommend looking elsewhere if considering the G460. I have a Thinkpad X301 that I use at work which I love. This led me to lenovo in the first place, but there is a chasm of quality that could have been closed but for a bit more QA in the lab at Lenovo.  (Quote)  (Reply)
