Lenovo ThinkPad L412 Review June 9, 2010

Lenovo released new L-series laptops as replacement product. Compared with the T series laptops, L series laptops are not in thin body, the performance is not as strong as T series. But the L series is still inherited the ThinkPad comfortable and durable, safe and reliable features. As the first 14.1-inch L series model, ThinkPad L412 comes with Intel Core i3 processor, to provide users with excellent performance. In addition, the L series used up to 30% of recycled materials, more environment friendly than a common laptop.

There are 14-inch Lenovo ThinkPad L412 and Lenovo 15-inch ThinkPad L512. ThinkPad L Series contains environmental concept, using up to 30% of recycled materials, and power consumption is 40% less than similar products, and this is the most recycled materials used laptop.
ThinkPad L412 have not changed much in appearance, Lenovo ThinkPad L412 is with a black matte surface. Volume control, power button and status lights are still in both sides of the keyboard. Loudspeakers are at the bottom of the screen which is as same as the ThinkPad SL410.

ThinkPad L412 is at the dimensions of 34.2 (L) x 23.3 (W) cm x 3.3 ~ 3.5 cm (H), which is certainly not the most thin and light notebook PCs。 With the standard 6 cell battery, the weight of ThinkPad L412 is just 2.36 kg. The T410 body thickness of 2.79 ~ 3.3 cm, with 6 cell battery weight 2.26 kg.
ThinkPad L412 features a similar keyboard on T400s, control feel is very good. As most ThinkPad notebooks, L412 provides trackball and touchpad. Users can freely use them according to their different ways. ThinkPad L412 supports multi-touch touchpad, only two fingers can easily zoom picture and other operations.

Throughout the test, L412 temperature performance is very good, we play videos in full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad temperature is 30 degrees, the temperature between G and H keys is 27.7 degrees, and bottom side temperature is 31.1.
We know, ThinkPad T410 offers two different resolutions for the user to choose, but the L412 14.1-inch LED-backlit display is only with a 1366 × 768 pixel resolution. The matte surface can effectively prevent the reflection, 3 people side by side watch film or some others are all right. The images and the game looks good, but performance of video playback is on the general.
Targeted at business applications, L412 speakers have a larger volume. Turn up the volume; you can clearly hear the music throughout the room.

2 million pixel camera provides a strong image quality, even in low light conditions, it is still performed well.
ThinkPad L412 comes with Intel Core i3-350M Processor with 2.26Ghz frequency. Although the performance may not be as strong as T410 (using Core i5 processor), but Core i3-350M is also quite well enough. PCMark Vantage benchmark tests showed that L412 laptop got 4167 points score. The score is higher than most thin and light notebook, but slightly lower than the ThinkPad Edge 14 (4293 points).

ThinkPad L412 features a 250GB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive, while, Lenovo L412 takes 57 seconds to boot up in 32-bit Windows 7 Professional. What’s worse, copying a 4.97GB multimedia file in the folder, L412 costs 4 minutes 33 seconds. In this test, the hard disk transfer rate is only 18.6Mbps, far below the average level of 23.5Mbps.

There is no doubt that Intel HM55 chipset integrated Intel GMA HD graphics can easily meet their daily tasks, but can not be qualified for the game. In the 3DMark06 test, L412 obtained 1586 marks.

ThinkPad L412 offers 6 or 9 cell battery. In the notebook battery test, open the WiFi to browse the Web with 6 cell battery, L412 lasted 3 hours and 47 minutes. If you want longer battery life, 9-cell battery is available, but the weight of Lenovo L412 is also increased.
